Bettie Marie Mairs, 87, of Wooster, died Friday, April 7, 2017 at Brenn-Field Nursing Center, in Orrville.
Friends may call Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Eric Fairhurst officiating. Burial will be at Plain Lutheran Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to LifeCare Hospice 1900 Akron Road, Wooster, Ohio 44691.
Bettie was born October 28, 1929 in Barbour County, West Virginia to Paul and Jesse {Armstrong} Shipman.
She married Elwood Chewning on May 1947. He passed away in May 1973. Bettie later married Max Mairs in July 1977. He passed away April 2014.
Bettie retired from Wooster Community Hospital after 25 years of service. She enjoyed traveling to West Virginia and also enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Bettie loved to entertain and having holiday dinners with her family.
Bettie will be deeply missed by her children Gary (Barb) Chewning, daughter-in-law Rita (Ray) Jeffries; step-children James Mairs and son Navarre, John Mairs and Kris Treece and son Jesse, all three of Wooster; brother-in-law Joe (Tony) Chewning of Vanderbilt, Michigan; sisters-in-law Janet Miller of Shreve, Carol Mairs of Wooster and Edith Chewning of Canton; nephews Mike White of Juneau, Alaska and Vic (Becky) Chewning of Wooster; nieces Deb (Mike) Pritchett, Nancy (Kenny) Meade, Bea (Dick) Patterson all of Wooster, and Kathy (Lenny) Dunaja of Maryland; grandchildren Brett (Katie) Chewning of Columbus, Kara (Dave) Colter of Shreve, Regan (Glenn) Meier of Wooster and Jessica (John) Kline of Michigan; 15 great-grandchildren.
Bettie was preceded in death by husbands Elwood Chewning and Max Mairs, son David Chewning, sisters Pauline Cave and Doris White, brothers Gene Shipman and Jim Shipman.
