David R Geitgey, 86, of Wooster died Thursday, August 20, 2009 at his residence.Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster.Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. David was born October 21,1922 in Orrville to Roy and Eunice {Hackett} Geitgey.David graduated from Apple Creek High School in 1940.He served in WWII from 1942-45.He was attached to the 1
st
Engineer Brigade.He landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day +1.Before being shipped home he played for the OISE All-Stars at first base.They were the ETO Champions of 1945.
He continued playing fastpitch softball when he returned home for the Brenner Brothers Team.They were City League Champions in 1946.He then played on the Wooster Lumber Team from 1947-60.
Dave worked at Koppers in Orrville for 15 years and Wooster Iron and Metal for 31 years.He retired in 1987.Dave enjoyed playing golf in leaques at Riceland and the College of Wooster and playing bridge.Dave was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ.
Dave married Georgia Numbers on November 20, 1942.They were married 50 years.Georgia passed away in 1993.They had two children Linda (Gene) Houmard of Wooster; and Ronald L. (Sue) Geitgey of Alvordton.
Dave married June Smith in 1994, he is survived by stepsons Doug (Deb) Smith of Columbus; and Denny (Phyllis) Smith of Wooster.She passed away in 2007.Also preceding him in death were his brother John Phillip Geitgey; sister Flora Geiser.
In addition to his children Dave is survived by grandchildren Cody Geitgey of Alvordton, and Carey (Shawn) Gorchenour of Toledo; and stepgrandchildren Doug (Dee) Houmard, Rod (Mary L.) Houmard of Wooster, Todd (Brenda) Houmard of Kenmore, WA, and Beth Houmard of Nebraska; brothers Marion Geitgey and Fred (Jean) Geitgey of Florida.
Dave wanted to acknowledge the wonderful care he received at Wayne Manor.The staff was exceptionally caring and capable.They were also considered family.
