Douglas C. Kline, 78, of Smithville, OH, formerly of Lakewood, OH, died peacefully at Life Care Hospice on January 5, 2019, of metastatic prostate cancer.
He was born in Cleveland on December 15, 1940, to Mary Ridilla and Howard J. Kline, and was the proud spouse and life partner of Timothy S. Homan, who survives. Their beloved Border Collie companion and best friend, Shadow, preceded him in death.
Doug retired from Key Trust Co NA and its previous companies. In 2012, he and Tim moved to Wayne County, OH, to five acres of land, woods, orchards, and a creek. The property includes a two-story outbuilding from which to observe birds and wildlife that visit strategically placed nesting sites and feeding stations. Doug particularly enjoyed watching the changing seasons and the non-stop activity right outside the windows. They affectionately called their property Sugar Creek Hollow.
Tim and Doug were together just shy of 30 years, and they married in a civil ceremony at home in October 2017, to attain the same rights by law as all couples, and to raise public awareness and acceptance of same-sex relationships.
Doug’s brother John (Marilyn), nephew Chuck (Sandy), and niece Susan Bassett (Jeff) survive, and nephew Robert predeceased him.
Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster is assisting the family with arrangements. No visitation; no services. Inurnment will be held at Smithville Cemetery.
