Earl William Miller, 86, passed away at his home in Lexington, Ohio, July 10, 2012, after a brief illness. He was in the company of his wife and family when angels came to escort him to Heaven.
Earl was born on November 19, 1925 to the late Geoffrey and Minnie (Berkheimer) Miller in Roaring Springs, Pennsylvania. Upon his graduation from Hollidaysburg (PA) High School, class of '43, he eagerly enlisted in the Marine Corps. (Yes, once a Marine, always a Marine!) His service during World War II found him at the controls of a tank in the Pacific theater. As part of the 2nd Division, he bravely and courageously served in places such as Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, Sasebo, and Nagasaki, though he rarely spoke of events there.
Following the war, he settled in Detroit and began a life-long career in steel processing. It was there that he found the love of his life, Carol Lee Jackson, whom he married in 1953. His work took him to various steel companies in Baltimore and Chicago. He retired from the Mansfield branch of National Material Corporation in 1992. During retirement, he spent many winters with friends and family as a snowbird, enjoying travel to the Arizona desert and Texas.
In addition to his parents, Earl was preceded in death by all his brothers – Carl, Russell, Robert, and Paul; and by sisters, Shirley, Daisy, Mabel, Treva, and Gertrude.
Those left to cherish the memory of "Willie", "EW", "Dudley", "Ed", "Uncle Skunk" or "Big Earl" are his wife of 59 years, Carol; daughters Vickie West (Jim) of Mansfield, Cindy Haskins (Teck) of Fort Worth, TX, and Jean Miller of Paradise, TX; grandchildren, Tracy (Robert) Melchoir, Lori Miller, Randall (Missie) Miller, Cuyler Haskins; great-granddaughters, Hannah Curren, Grace Miller, Delaney Miller, and Charlee Miller; extended grand & great-grandchildren: Joanne, Rachel, Kyle, Cobretti, Blade, Kiera, Chase, Brooklyn, Jessica and Tatum; his sister Erdine Sneath, step-sister Mary Stewart and many much-loved family and friends.
Celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 14th at Oak Grove Memorial Park. Officiating will be Rev. James Randas of the Lexington Presbyterian Church and dear friend Rev. Robert Haskins, with internment to follow. Memorials may be made to MedCentral Hospice of Mansfield OH. Online tributes may be made at www.Robertsfuneralhome.com.
