Edward Chapman Sweeney, 87, of Wooster, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 4, 2023, at Smithville Western Nursing Home.
Ed was born on April 8, 1936, in Indian Mills, West Virginia, to the late Allen and Mildred (Beasley) Sweeney. He proudly served his country in the US Army.
On July 10, 1993, Ed married the love of his life, Linda Ryan Wardle, who survives him. Ed was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, leaving behind cherished memories for his family and friends.
Throughout his life, Ed worked as a skilled tool and die maker at General Motors. He attended Grace Church, where he found great joy in his faith and fellowship. Ed was a talented woodworker, and made the most beautiful furniture, and took pleasure in building and remodeling houses. Additionally, he had a passion for riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles and always had a helping hand for anyone in need. Ed was known as the treasurer for the King’s Daughters and the HOA treasurer for Deer Creek, as well as a masterful storyteller.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Linda; his children, Matt Sweeney, Cyndy Klaiber, Deborah (Cliff) Scott, Jenny (Ron) White, Katie (Drew) Mundon, and Bill (Tammy) Wardle; 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; his sister, Nell Winterstein; sister-in-law, Amy Sweeney; daughter-in-law, Pam Bobo; and son-in-law, Dan Zuk.
Ed was preceded in death by his children, Mike Sweeney and Betsy Zuk, as well as his siblings Cecil Sweeney, Ruby Sweeney, Nancy Garbesi, Ida Lawrence, Eloise McCowan, and Ralph Sweeney.
A memorial service to celebrate Ed's life will be held on Thursday at Grace Church in Wooster. The visitation hours are from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by the service at 6:30 p.m., officiated by Pastor Max Deffenbaugh. Burial will take place at Spring Grove Cemetery.
