Evelyn Lucille (Elmer) Decker, Age 93; of Wooster, formerly of Newcomerstown, died on September 23, 2016 at Brookdale Wooster in Wooster, Ohio.
Friends will be received from 12:00pm – 2:00pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 121 S. College Street, Newcomerstown, OH. Funeral services will follow with Rev. Kenneth G. Hacker officiating. Burial will be at Salem-Union Cemetery, Port Washington, OH.
Evelyn was born in Port Washington on September 20, 1923, the daughter of the late Paul and Melva (Stocker) Emler. She grew up on Nugent Street in Newcomerstown. Evelyn graduated from Newcomerstown High School, the class of 1941. She graduated with honors and excelled in Latin. She worked at the Five & Dime. Evelyn married Robert Wayne Decker on February 6, 1942. They were married for over 71 years. While her husband served in the Army from 1940-1943, Evelyn worked for Schumakers Ford Agency in Newcomerstown. Upon his return they built their home in the country with the help of Evelyn's father, Paul Emler. She became a homemaker busy with a large garden and canning her vegetables each summer. She also was a great seamstress, sewing Easter outfits and more, but she didn't stop there she enjoyed upholstering furniture and making curtains. Evelyn was a dedicated mother raising three children. Her days were filled with other interests. She served as a 4-H advisor for the "Bake & Baste 4-H Club" in Stone Creek. She was a member of the Buckhorn Grange for over 55 years where she served as treasurer. Later, she participated in the Lutheran Church Women in America at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Newcomerstown and then served two terms as President of the Ohio LCWA. As a member of St. Paul she served as a Sunday school teacher, vacation bible school coordinator, church council member and other committees. Adding to her list of accomplishments, Evelyn was an insurance agent for Aid Association for Lutherans (AAL).
Evelyn became interested in antiques so she became a business-woman and started Decker's Antiques. After Robert retired, he joined her in the antique business adding his handy work and built another building for their antiques. The two of them enjoyed traveling the world to over 70 countries. After Evelyn lost her parents, she designed a stained-glass window for the new church at St. Paul. It was dedicated on January 26, 2003 in memory of her parents. The stained-glass window over the altar is still in place today.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Wayne Decker, and her parents, Paul and Melva Emler. She is survived by her brother, Charles Richard Emler. She is also survived by two daughters and a son, Barbara and husband Delbert Eggert, Rock Hill, SC, Janice and her husband John Elliott, Wooster and Richard Decker, Lexington, KY; there are also six grandsons, Justin and wife Kathleen Elliott, White Lake, MI, Damon and his wife Dee Eggert, Rock Hill, SC, Matthew and his wife Marissa Decker, Belton, TX, Todd and his wife Amy Elliott, Sunbury, OH, Dr. Derek and his wife Lauren Eggert of Richmond, TX, and Jeff and his wife Anna Decker, White Salmon, WA; also, there are six great-grandchildren Renee Decker, White Salmon, WA, Delilah Decker, Belton, TX, Hudson Eggert, Richmond, TX, Juniper Decker, Belton, TX, Hawthorne Decker, White Salmon, WA and Larry Sampson, Columbus, OH.

The family would like to thank each and every person who assisted and cared for her at Brookdale Place of Wooster where she lived for over nine years. In addition, Evelyn's family would like to thank LifeCare Hospice of Wooster for the special care they gave her.
