George G. Sprowls, 97, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, Saturday, May 27, 2023.
George was born to the late Lloyd Sumney Sprowls and Della Grounds Sprowls, May 5, 1926, in Houston, PA. He graduated from Chartiers High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving in the Pacific and China during WWII. George obtained an honorable discharge in 1946 and started to Washington & Jefferson College. After one year he transferred to Temple University where he was a varsity wrestler. Mr. Sprowls graduated from Temple with a pharmacy degree.
He began his pharmacy career at Herd Drug Store, Inc. in Washington, PA, and soon became an owner of the business along with Dorothy J. Stull. George retired after forty-nine years. He spent his next twenty-five years going to his farm, where he had raised longhorn cattle for many years. George and his wife relocated in late summer 2022.
Mr. Sprowls was a member of the Society of the Descendants of Washington’s Army at Valley Forge and a fifty year member of the Chartiers Lodge 297 F. & A. M. of Pennsylvania. He loved all things pertaining to the Civil War and the American West.
On April 27, 1979, George married Patricia (Carter) Sprowls, who survives. Also surviving are his son, George C. Sprowls of Scottsdale, AZ and stepdaughters, Lisa (Jeffrey) Bricker of Wooster, OH, and Leslie (Douglas) Grubenhoff of Scottsdale, AZ. Four grandchildren, Zachary and Caitlin Scott, Sofia Cochran, Poppy Grubenhoff, three step grandchildren, Emma, Maggie and William Grubenhoff and three nieces, Carole (Rob) Berley, Bonnie Matteson and Mary (George) Kaadi and their families also survive Mr. Sprowls.
Deceased are a sister, Lucile Sprowls Whitaker and three brothers, Wilbert W. Sprowls, Dr. Jay R. Sprowls and Dr. John J. Sprowls.
