Gladene (Deanie) Collins died January 10 at home in Wooster, Ohio, with her husband Gord holding her hand.
A celebration of life of Deanie will take place on Sunday, January 20, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Gault Recital Hall at Scheide Music Center on The College of Wooster campus (525 E. University St., Wooster, OH 44691). Guests are welcome to gather beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Scheide Music Center lobby.
Deanie was born in Fairport, Missouri, on February 23, 1937, to Gladys and Stewart Sherard two years before her brother Col. Stewart Sherard (U.S. Army Ret.). Brother Stu still holds the West Point free throw percentage record. Deanie lived most of her life in the state of Missouri until she married Gordon Collins in 1997 and moved to Wooster. Deanie fell in love with Wooster and with The College of Wooster -- its chorus, its men's basketball team, its men's tennis team, and the loveliness of the campus. She had many friends at the Coccia House, Morefield Pottery, Buehler's, and other establishments in downtown Wooster. While she only lived in Wooster 15 years, she made dozens, maybe even hundreds, of friends over those years.
Deanie contracted polio at the age of 9 and spent over a year in a full body brace but by learning to tap dance and ball room dance she recovered and became a high school beauty queen and the Marshall High School drum majorette.
Deanie taught high school physical education and business in the Kansas City area for a number of years and raised a family of four children. These four children are Dr. Kurt (Stephanie) Kavanaugh, Kent (Donna) Kavanaugh, Dr. Kirby Kavanaugh, and Kelly Kavanaugh (deceased).
In addition to raising these successful children, Deanie was the quintessential believer that "everything is up to date in Kansas City," and she helped to make it so. She helped to make it the "City of Fountains," and she was a major player in making the "Northland Boom." She loved Kansas City first as she came to love Wooster!
Deanie also had a number of grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Katie, Tyler, Matthew, Molly, Madison, and McKenzie. Plus she has almost more step-grandchildren than you can mention but they will be mentioned anyway: Andrea, Melissa, Kailee, Kiera, Kasey, and Megan; and, finally, one great grandson Karson. Finally, there are two special "adopted" children in Deanie and her husband Gordon's life: Dr. Dan Jones and Ms. Kate Dolan.
