On December 14, 1915 Jack D. Bennett was born in Lawrenceville, Ill. to Roy Elmer and Aleatha Gay Malone Bennett. This was the start of a life full of adventures (some good and some not so good). At the age of 5 he sold newspapers on a street corner in Chicago for a nickel and got to keep a penny for everyone he sold. Because of the economic hardships of the times his family moved 14 times during his 12 years of going to school. Sometimes finding himself well behind everyone in his classes other times way ahead. This did not detour him from attending Malone College later in his life. He had the knack of making friends, fitting in and finding adventures where ever he was. He loved sports and played high school football when the only gear you wore was a leather cap for head protection. A boy scout from the time he was old enough to join. He played in the Scouts Drum and Bugle Core and was a life guard for many of the camps. When he had a family of his own, he was a scout leader for his sons.
In 1935 he worked in the oil fields in Michigan where he met his future wife Mary Marie Shrimplin. When the oil fields were no longer producing, he got a job on the Pennsylvania R.R... After his marriage to Mary in 1938 they moved to Alma Michigan where he worked for the Mid-West Refinery. During both World War ll and the Korean War he was within one day of shipping out when he was called back because he was the superintendent of that plant and they were making the fuel for the tanks, planes and the navy. In 1950 he and his family which now included 4 children moved to Wooster, Ohio where he started working for the State Auto Insurance Co. He was a claims adjuster for them for 31 years before his retirement. He loved traveling with his family and camped in every state but Alaska and camped from the east coast to the west coast of Canada.
He was deeply involved with the Masons and had been a member for 75 years. He felt these men where some of the finest people he had ever known and considered them the brothers he never had.
Jack had 3 sisters, Pansy Beatrice, Juanita Gloria and Patria (Pat) Hiawatha all deceased. He and his wife Mary had 4 children Jack D. (Angel) of Baytown TX., Rex M. & (Judy) of Wooster, Jan M. Douglas & (John) of Wooster and Dyke J. (Linda) of Las Vegas NV., 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and one great great-grandchild. He also has a niece Gayle Ann of Indiana and a great niece, Kisha in Calif.
His first wife Mary Marie died in June 1990. His second wife Virginia died in 1973. His wife Rosemary E. whom he married in 1975 died in March 2003. He was also preceded in death by 2 grandchildren.
Jack lived a full life and died on August 25, 2015 following his own rules. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
