Jerry Akers

April 20, 1943 — February 2, 2019

Jerry Andrew Akers, 75, formerly of Litchfield, died peacefully Saturday February 2, 2019 at his home.

Jerry was born April 20, 1943 in Glen Lyn, Virginia to Andrew Lincoln Akers and Lena Dora Mae{Stowers} Akers.

Jerry was a Vietnam veteran, honorably serving his country in the U.S. Navy from Feb 27, 1964 thru April 22, 1968 as an Aviation Machinist’s Mate (Reciprocating Eng Mech) Petty Officer 3rd class. He proudly served aboard both the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) “Big E” and USS Coral Sea (CVA-43).

Jerry enjoyed working with his hands, construction, vehicle repairs, or helping others with creative projects. He had a true passion to fix what was old or broken. He saw the beauty and appreciated antiques and old homes and enjoyed returning them to life. Jerry could fix anything and was often seen working on classic cars, semi-trucks, forklifts, boats, or anything with a motor. Jerry was a treasure hunter who collected antiques, coins, kerosene lamps, cars, tools, and anything he deemed of value.

Jerry will be deeply missed by his daughters: Deborah (Aaron) Holmes of Westminster CO, Laura (Mack) Collins of Florence SC, Karen (Jefferson) Barfield of Florence SC, Jennifer (Aaron) Flores of Ventura CA; twelve grandchildren: Brandon (Rebecca) Elledge of Ocklawaha, FL, Dustan (Mya) Elledge of Westminster, CO, Tyler Elledge of Westminster, CO, Kayla (Mathew) Koumas of Florence, SC, Sierra (Zachery) Wedgeworth of Newport, NC, SaLena Elledge of Westminster, CO, Alaina Barfield of

Florence, SC, and Grainger Barfield of Florence SC, Jonathan Flores of Ventura CA, Kamiley Flores of Ventura CA, Kaylan Flores of Ventura CA, and Jacob Flores of Ventura CA; six great-grandchildren: Elizabeth Elledge, Dakota Elledge, Kaleb Elledge, Charlotte Elledge, Marcus Elledge, and Collins Koumas. Also surviving his brother Ray (Vicki) Akers of Polk, OH; sisters Susan Getson of Lafayette, IN and Betty Travis of Lodi, OH.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, brother Thomas Akers of Elyria OH, sisters Lila Haney of Lodi, OH, and Ronda Bragg of West Salem, OH.

Committal service with military honors will be held on Monday, April 22, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. Arrangements by Roberts Funeral Home.
