Dr. John Cornelius Hockett III, 96, of Wooster, died Tuesday, March 28, 2023, at his residence with his family by his side.
John was born October 8, 1926, in Kansas City, MO to J. Cornelius and Nannie Lillian {Dixon} Hockett II. He served in the US Navy during WWII on the U.S.S. Alabama at Okinawa, and then later on the U.S.S. South Dakota, acting as the ship’s “oil man” as she passed through the Panama Canal. John earned doctoral degrees in both Marine Science and Education, both disciplines remaining passions throughout the rest of his life.
John married Freda Keith in 1944. She passed away in 1991. He then married Peggy {Bates} Archacki, who passed away in January of 2020.
John was a teacher, coach, college administrator, and professor for many educational institutions throughout the United States. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Wooster, where he enjoyed singing in the choir. John’s love for music was a big part of his life; he built, played, and wrote music for the mountain dulcimer, and sang with the Wooster Choral Union, enjoying many friendships with other members.
John will be deeply missed by children Hannah (Jack Bowersock) Roscoe of Loudonville, Jill (Ronald) Munro of Wooster, Meg (Bob Gardner) Archer of Medina, Mark (Alicia Lancashire) Archacki of Seattle, WA, and Jeff Archacki of Corvallis, OR; grandchildren Anna Munro, Alexandr Hampton; many nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, and his beloved companions Daisy and Calvin.
John was preceded in death by his wives, Freda and Peggy, son Keith Hockett, and sisters Nancy Montgomery and Alice Montgomery.
A memorial service will be held April 15th at 11 AM at St. James Episcopal Church in Wooster with Rev. Evan Fischer officiating. Online tributes may be made at www.RobertsFuneralHome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ohio’s LifeCare Hospice, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, Ohio 44691. The family would like to thank the LifeCare team and family friends and caregivers Beth, Betty, Chrissy, and Amanda for their compassion and care of John.
