John G. Roberts, 74, of Wooster, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at Wooster Community Hospital. John was born February 4, 1939 in Lodi, Ohio to Griffin and Eugenia {Keller} Roberts.
He graduated from Hilliard High School and The Ohio State University with a BS degree in Agriculture Education. He earned his Master Degree in counseling from Westminster College, New Wilmington, PA.
He married Dona Schaffner on February 14, 2004.
John dedicated his life to teaching and enriching lives with his humor, knowledge and wisdom. His career started in Andover, OH. He helped start the Greene County Joint Vocational School. He also assisted in the development of OSU- ATI where he taught for 18 years before retiring in 1995. He was awarded the State Honorary FFA Degree. Created and implemented many State FFA contests throughout Ohio. He was a consultant and teacher at Ashland -West Holmes Career Center. John served as a vocational instructor for 14 years for the Amish Community through the Holmes County Education Foundation. He was a member of the Wooster Grace Brethren Church where he served as a youth leader, served on the committee to develop Wooster Christian School, active with the Social Concerns Committee, and played on the softball team. He loved antique hit-and-miss engines and was an avid follower of the Ohio State Buckeyes.
John will be deeply missed by his wife Dona; children Pam (Jim) Fulton of Troy, OH, Philip (Rita) of Wooster, Steve (Karen) of Port Clinton, OH, Aleta (Ed) Griffie of Dalton; grandchildren Dakota, Zane, Gabriella, and Ezekiel Fulton, James, Destiny, Orion, Starla, Lydia and Evan Roberts; brothers Robert (Linda) of West Jefferson, OH and Tom (Diane) of Sylvania; sisters Pat (Alan) Evans of Gahanna, and Sandy (Andy) Beyers of Troutville, VA. John was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Pearl Roberts; stepchildren James ( Tara) Schaffner of Wellington, Florida, David Schaffner New Philadelphia, OH and Sarah (Doug) Schrock of Zone, OH. Grandchildren James Adam and Abigail Schaffner of Wellington, Florida, Eric, Andrew and Nick Schaffner of New Philadelphia, Kathryn (Klein) Gnagey of Archibold, OH, Hannah Schrock of Columbus, OH and Ian Schrock of Zone, OH.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Grace Brethren Church, 4599 Burbank Rd, Wooster. Services will be Saturday at 11 at Grace Brethren Church with Pastor Robert D. Fetterhoff officiating.
