Lena Horn, 95, passed away Sunday September 17, 2017 at LifeCare Hospice Wooster. She was born in Adena, Ohio February 14, 1922 to Earnest and Altai Moore. She was one of eight children, and a graduate of Smithville High School.
In 1947, Lena found love. She was a teller at Citizens National Bank in downtown Wooster, and experienced car trouble one morning. After work, she walked to Miller and Markle Gas Station for assistance. A good-looking man, just home from World War II, offered her a ride to determine her car problem. The next day, he walked into the bank on his lunch break to open an account and Robert J. Horn and Lena began their courtship. They eloped to Ashland, Kentucky and married August 16, 1947. Lena continued to be his bookkeeper during his business career when Bob built the Sohio Gas Station in the then northend of Wooster and later the Green Leaf Restaurant. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Lena was a member of Eastern Star, and a lifetime volunteer with Wooster Community Hospital Women’s Auxiliary. After Robert’s sudden early passing, Lena volunteered her time and grandmother spirit at Wooster Twp. Elementary School. She got great joy as a teacher’s aide with Julie Gilson’s classroom. People to People Ministries was another organization that Lena gave her time and energy.
Lena enjoyed traveling. She had many memories beginning with a camper when the kids were young, then Airstreaming with Robert and friends. Later cruising Alaska, Hawaii, New England, and to the Panama Canal.
Mother to Betty (Ron) Stine, Janet (Tom) Malone, and Elaine (Tim) Boak. Grandmother to Wendy, Jeff and Jason Stine, Jennifer Stine and step-grandmother to Kelly, Kimberly, and Coleen. Great Grandmother to Derek, Malory, Brayden, Katelyn, Kayla and a new baby girl arriving in November. Step-great grandmother to Megan, Molly, Madeline, Andrew, Emily, Anna, Zachery, Anthony and Delaney. Sister to Marjorie Noletti, Wilda Soka, Wayne Moore and David Moore. Lena was preceded in death by husband Robert on July 17, 1989 and brothers, Bascom, Haldane and Glenn Moore.
We can’t be sad today. She is reunited with and in the arms of the love of her life.
Friends may call Wednesday, September 20, 4 to 6 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. A private family service will be held at a later date officiated by Pastor Harley Snode and laid to rest beside her beloved Robert at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to LifeCare Hospice at 1900 Akron Road, Wooster, Ohio 44691.
A special thank you to Lena’s favorite nurse and coffee buddy at Danbury Woods, Marion Cox, and to the angels at LifeCare for their kind and respectful comfort and care.
