Lori was born, May 27, 1960 in Orrville, Ohio. Lori's parents were Norman Garver and Judy Kurtz Porter.
Lori was an athlete and has won many gold medals over the years at State Special Olympic games. Lori was known as a powerful swimmer, and took first in almost every competition she entered. Her family would like to thank the lifeguards of Orr Pool for helping Lori learn to swim. Little did they know that someday Lori would go on to win 3 Gold Medals at the Special Olympic World Summer Games in 1995 as a power lifter, thanks to the upper body strength and training she
received from House of Iron coaches and George Starr. One of those medals she won, she declared "This one's for my coach." That coach is George Starr, who had coached her since she was 13 years old. Lori was
inducted into the wall of fame at the Wooster YMCA and her picture can be seen on their wall.
Lori worked for many years at Nick Amster Workshop, until she retired.
Lori also had a special place in her heart for helping elderly people. She also performed sign language with the Nick Amster Bell Choir. All that knew Lori remember her as the girl with the smile and the laugh.
Lori is survived by her father Norman Garver of Colorado, her grandmother Edith Kurtz of Youngstown, her sister April Garver Ling and step-sister Carmel Stokes, both of Florida, and stepdad Rex Porter and his wife Deb Toddhunter of Minnesota. "Aunt Lori" had two nieces, Erica Hand and Tara Hand of Wooster, and 3 great nephews. Lori's Aunt Linda Heap, Uncle Jeff Kurtz, Uncle Lester Garver, and Aunt Virginia also complete her family. Lori had another family as well, and that would be all the ladies and staff that she lived with since 1990. Her family at Friendsville Residential Group home brought Lori many years of love and laughter and joy. For many years, she enjoyed the special friendship of her boyfriend John Becker.
Predeceased were her mother Judy Kurtz Porter who died in 1989, her Grandpa Ross Kurtz, and Grandpa Lester Garver.
