Lorraine Paulus

October 22, 1930 — August 3, 2015

Lorraine M. Freeman Paulus was ushered into the presence of the Lord on August 3rd, 2015 in Ashland, Ohio. She was born on October 22, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Jay Martin Freeman and his wife, Elma Elvira King Freeman, both of Chicago, Illinois. Lorraine attended Farragut High School and Moody Bible Institute.
Her husband of 54 years was the late Glenn F. Paulus also of Chicago, who was the founder and President of Candid Wedding Photographers in Phoenix, Arizona. They had five children together: Glenn Jay Paulus of Ashland, OH; Garrett Keith Paulus of Albuquerque, NM; Timothy Lee Paulus of Phoenix, AZ; Lorlyn Joy Paulus Senz of Ashland, OH; and Terry E. Paulus of Dayton, OH. 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren survive Lorraine.
Her siblings are Marilyn Durham of Phoenix, AZ; the late Jay Harvey Freeman also from Phoenix; the late Charles Benjamin (Joseph) Freeman of Palos Park, Illinois; the late James Garrett Freeman of San Bruno, CA; the late Derlene (Geri) Van Voorhees of Phoenix, AZ, and the late Mary Lou Freeman of Chicago, IL.
In the early 60's Lorraine's parents moved to Phoenix from Chicago to help care for the youngest of the children, making it possible for Lorraine to begin her professional music endeavors learned at Moody under the professorship of the late John W. Peterson, the great modern day hymn writer.
In 1967, Lorraine began to direct a youth choir for Bethany Bible Church, the largest independent, fundamental Bible church in the state of Arizona. She worked under the leadership of the late Rev. Vern Van Hovel, Minister of Music. Van Hovel encouraged her to continue building the successful program into a graded choir, encompassing the ages of kindergarten through twelfth grade.
About the time Lorraine began directing, her former professor, the late John W. Peterson, also moved to the Valley of the Sun. He had just written the musical drama composition No Greater Love, and chose Lorraine to take the lead role of "Flavia". The program premiered in the Phoenix Symphony Hall, and had several additional performances in the Bethany Bible Church sanctuary.
When she turned over the leadership of the choirs to the next director, she chose to remain active and became a Professional Nanny for new-borns. Her clients were high-end Professionals who needed someone to care for their precious bundles of joy while they were away on globetrotting vacations or professional business.
After her husband's retirement, Lorraine and Glenn began to travel the country visiting their children and old friends from Chicago. Wherever they hung their hat, Lorraine continued to serve in various capacities in the music departments of both small and large churches in Phoenix, AZ; Mountain Home, AR; Dayton, OH; and Albuquerque, N.M.
All praise belongs to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ who enabled Lorraine to accomplish all the tasks He gave her to do.
Services will be Friday at 6 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel, Ashland with Pastor Harry Strachan and Pastor Josh Cehulik officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 5 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. A private graveside service will be held at Fairview Memorial Park in Chicago, IL.
