R. Jean Hawkins, 88, of Ashland, died January 8, 2013 at the Cleveland Clinic.
Jean was the adopted daughter of the late Josiah and Eva (Lloyd) Gump. She was an Ashland resident since the age of 9. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1944. On May 22, 1948 she married Oakley Guy Hawkins, who preceded her in death in 2009.
She worked at Eagle Rubber in 1944, until the war ended, where she received the Army Navy E Award for the war effort. She worked at National Latex for 15 years and a short period at Barnhill Ice Cream and Perkins Pancake House. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Savannah, she was a charter member of the Christian Alliance Church in Ashland, where she taught Sunday school for 27 years. She enjoyed poetry and collecting dolls.
Jean is survived by one daughter, Teresa Ann (Vernon) Jones of Mansfield; two grandchildren, Troy Allen (Denna) Hawkins of Nova and Jodell Lynn (Robert) Newberry of Mansfield; five great-grandchildren, Kaley, Kristin and Olivia Hawkins of Nova and Tesla and Nathan Newberry of Mansfield; one great-great-grandchild, Brycen Newberry of Mansfield; one sister, Lucille Wheeler of Phoenix, AZ; and one foster daughter, Angie (Joe) Fowler of Myrtle Beach, NC.
In addition to her adopted parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Roger Lee Hawkins.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, January 14, 2013 at Roberts Funeral Home, Ashland Chapel, 1058 US Rte 250, Ashland with Rev. John Bouquet officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday, January 13, 2012 from 2pm-4pm at the funeral home. .Burial will be at Ashland County Memorial Park.
