Richard "Dick" F. Rutter, 72, of Wooster, passed peacefully from this life into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, May 22, at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster.
Friends will be received Thursday from 5-7 p.m at the Church of the Saviour, 480 Fry Road, Wooster. Services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Church of the Saviour with Rev. Jerry Durham officiating. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, where military rites will be held.
He was born September 9, 1943 in Wooster to Clarence and Wilma McPhail Rutter and married Judy K. Mays on November 23, 1968.
Dick served in the U.S. Air Force from 1961-1964 and was proud to be reunited with all his Kincheloe, Michigan buddies at a reunion in 2009. He retired from Nickles Bakery after 32 years as a driver-salesman and made many friends along the way. He always had a cup of coffee in his hand and a smile on his face! While his daughters were in school he coached soccer and had a girls traveling team that took 1st place in their division. Dick enjoyed helping out wherever he was needed while all his girls went to Beall Ave. School and all the kids knew "Mr. Rutter."
He had a large garden and took pride in raising produce to share with all his family and friends. He loved talking to his neighbors and helping those in need. Dick and Judy enjoyed going to flea markets where he gathered many "treasures" along the way!
But the greatest pride in his life were his children and grandchildren and his two "greats". Dick loved going to all their games, band concerts, and programs. He was "Pappy" to them and together they built memories that will last a lifetime.
Dick truly loved life and said the phrase "giving up is not in my vocabulary!"
He is survived by his wife Judy, son Rick (Jodie) Rutter of Virginia; daughters, Shelley (Joe) Geiser and Shannon (Brent) Carpenter all of Holmesville and Tiffany (Ronnie) Hill of Wooster; grandchildren, Carrie Rutter of Florida, Ashley (Nick) Robison of Millersburg, Samantha and Ricky Rutter of Virginia, Kayla and Kiana Carpenter and Cole and Taegan Geiser all of Holmesville, Jalen and Caleb "CJ" Walters and Josilyn and Jasmyn Hill of Wooster; great-granddaughters Aubrey Grace McCarthy of Apple Creek and Mia Grace Robison of Millersburg; "Pappy's" special "granddaughter" Lauren McCarthy of Apple Creek; brother Lester Rutter of Illinois and sister Phyllis (Denny) Smith of Wooster.
We thank you for all your love and support and for being the "constant" in our lives. We love you "Pappy"! no more pain and no more treatments! Fly away!
