Robert "Bob" Owen Houghton, 92, of Wooster, died Tuesday March 25, 2014 at West View Healthy Living, in Wooster.
Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 am at the funeral home with Pastor Eric Fairhurst officiating. Bob was born December 22, 1921 in Briceton, Ohio to Clair Wesley and Lucy Evelyn {Conine} Houghton. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 35 years, Mary Joan Wysong. He married Marie Baker Kachmar on March 5, 1984.
Robert served 6 years in the Marine Corp. during WWII as a sergeant during which time he was wounded by shrapnel. He served in the Pacific Theater, fighting battles on Guam, Guadalcanal and the Solomon Islands. After returning home, Robert graduated from Tri-State College in Civil Engineering in 1948. He worked for Bogner Construction Co. for 11 years and enjoyed volunteering as a Boy Scout leader and spending time renovating his family's century home. Robert later became the president of Progress Construction Inc. until retirement, after which he volunteered with People to People for 15 years. He was a member of Oak Chapel.
Robert was best known for his wood working talents and generosity. During his life he personally handcrafted hundreds of wood items as a labor of love for others, giving freely of his talents. He was always willing to help others with advice or labor.
Roberts resided in independent living at West View Healthy Living and then moved to their onsite nursing home. He was well cared for by Dr. Miller and a friendly, loving staff that gave respect and dignity to the residents. Robert will be missed by family and friends.
Robert will be deeply missed by his wife of 32 years, Marie; five children George (Robyn) Houghton of Rocky River, OH, Brian (Deborah) Houghton of Ft, Wayne, IN, Laura (Jim) Safford of Wilmington, NC, Perri (Roger) Snyder of Ashland, OH, Kerry (Bill) Michalism of Pittsburgh, PA; seven stepchildren John (Carla) Kachmar of Akron, OH, Rebecca (Eric) Herr of Bristol, NH, Joan (Blake) Swartz of Wooster, Jeff (Betsy) Kachmar of Ft. Wayne, IN, Scott Kachmar of Pittsburgh, PA, Leora (Adam) Langdon of Troy, OH, Suzanne Kachmar of Wooster; 15 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; sister Lois (Pat) Shirk of Minster, OH.
In addition to his first wife, Robert was preceded in death by his sister Betty Miller.
