Robert J. Maurer Jr., 80, of Lehigh Acres, Florida, died Sunday morning, September 4, 2016 at his residence following a long illness.
Robert was born January 22, 1936 in Canton, OH to Robert J. Sr. and Helen M. {Irwin} Maurer.
Robert graduated from Bellville High School in 1954. He served in the United States Army Reserves for eight years.
He married Nancy Jane Arnold on July 7, 1956. She passed away on April 9, 2005. Robert then married Sandra Lee Young on May 8, 2006, she survives.
Robert worked as a Millwright/Machine Repairman with the Gorman Rupp Company in Mansfield, where he retired in 1997 after more than 24 years of service. He was a member of the Woodville Grace Brethren Church and the Cook Road Baptist Church when he lived in Mansfield. Robert's passion was building detailed model airplanes by hand. He was known for watching (and coaching) the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State University football teams from his easy chair when they were televised in Florida. Robert also enjoyed spending time feeding the backyard birds and puttering in his yard and garage.
Robert will be deeply missed by his wife Sandra of more than 10 years; children Robert J. (Linda) Maurer III of Alva, FL and Cynthia K. (John) Bonin of Butler; step-children Kathy Ray and Kimberly Findly of Ohio, Ken Davis of St. Augustine, FL; grandchildren Michael Dale Maurer and Angel Lynn Maurer; ten step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren ; sisters Kimberly I. (Richard) Altemeyer of Fort Myers, FL and Tamara A. (Michael Ruth) Carr of Alva, FL.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Edmund Riesbeck and step-mother Ruth Ann Maurer, wife Nancy of 48 years, step-daughter Karen Kaurtz, brother Thomas O. Maurer, and sister Pamela A. Jensen.
Memorial services are being held at Hope Hospice in Fort Myers, FL. Graveside services will be held at Ashland County Memorial Park at a later date. Roberts Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel, Ashland is assisting the family with arrangements.
