Robert "Bob" Lester Wendling, 79, of Ashland, died Thursday, February 18, 2016 at Samaritan Hospital.
Bob was born May 1, 1936 in Perrysville, Ohio to Carl Wilhelm and Margaret Rosella {Gretzinger} Wendling.
He married Kathleen Gelhorn on August 16, 1964.
Bob graduated from Perrysville High School in 1954. He went on to graduate from Ashland College with a B.S. degree in 1959 and from Pennsylvania State University with an M.A. in Math Education in 1963. Bob continued his studies at University of Oklahoma.
Bob was proud to have been a Math Professor at Ashland College (Ashland University) for 37 years before retiring in 2000. During that same time he served as a NCAA Faculty Representative for the school, touching the lives of many student athletes and coaches alike and receiving numerous awards recognizing his service. He also worked for Wendling Brothers Masonry with his brothers.
He was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He served on church council, led an ushering team, was a courtesy parker, and most recently was on the planning committee for the new addition to the Narthex of the church. Through Trinity Bob was a volunteer member on a building trip to St. Croix.
He was also a member of the Mathematics Association of America and National Council Teachers of Mathematics.
Bob will be deeply missed by his wife of 51 years; children Valerie Wendling of Herdon, VA, Victoria (Peter) Donati of Evanston, IL, and Jeffrey (Christine) Wendling of Wake Forest, NC; grandchildren Julia Donati, Kathleen "Katy" Donati, Brody Wendling and Joshua Wendling; brothers Max (Ruth) Wendling of Ashland, Ted (Vivian) Wendling of Perrysville, Ed (Marian) Wendling of Copperas Cove, TX and Dick (Angi) Wendling of Centerville; sister Jean (Wallace) Schott of Waxhaw, NC.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Rose Viers and brother-in-law Julius Viers.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Roberts Funeral Home-Ashland Chapel. Memorial services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Michael Koch officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Ashland County Memorial Park.
