Roscoe C. Porter Sr., 79, of Ashland, died Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Brethren Care Village, after a short battle with lung cancer.
Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ashland Church of Christ. Services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at the church with Tim Nowlin officiating. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Ashland County Memorial Park, where military rites will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Ashland Church of Christ at 1185 County Road 1356, Ashland, OH 44805.
Roscoe was born April 30, 1938 in Winding Gulf, West Virginia to Franklin and Minnie {Soots} Porter.
He served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1959, and was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal. While serving his country, Roscoe married Jessie F. Daniels on May 15, 1958. She passed away on July 21, 2014 after 56 years of marriage.
Roscoe retired from Hedstrom (formerly Eagle Rubber) in 2002 after 33 years of service as Compound Group Leader and he served as President of United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO-CLC local union no. 524. He was an active member of Ashland Church of Christ and was a member of American Legion #87 for 22 years.
Roscoe will be deeply missed by his children Pam (Jeff) Kerr of Copley, Roscoe (Myrna) Porter Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA, Teresa (Bob) Stanley of Wilmington, NC and Judy Porter (Nikki Bone) of Ashland; grandchildren Tara (Keith) O’Neal of Nolensville, TN, Benjamin Kerr of Copley, Bobby Stanley of Wilmington, NC, Chelsea Kerr of Copley; great-grandchildren Amelia, Grant and Ethan O’Neal, Grace Kerr; brother Charles (Jo) Porter of Kansas; sisters Ina Miller of West Virginia, Zella Hollman of Virginia, Reva Cooper of Florida, and Shirley (Bill) Seville of Virginia; nephew David Porter; brothers-in-law Bill Daniel and Gene Miller; sisters-in-law Jenny (Roy) Mitchum, Bonnie (Scott) Silsby, Ella Mitchum and Sue Daniel.
Roscoe was preceded in death by brothers Donald, Arthur, Robert, Arlie, and Herman Porter, and sisters Margaret Porter and Betty Price.
