On February 18, 2018, Sophia M. Stoner passed away of natural causes, one month shy of her 96th birthday. Born March 23, 1922 in Lansing, MI to Ukrainian emigrant parents, John and Anna Nessner, she was the third of four daughters. In 1943, Sophia met Richard J. Stoner at a local dance, with whom she fell in love and promptly married the following year. They ultimately settled in Upper Arlington, OH in 1955 where Sophia maintained her career as a homemaker, raising four boys. She was a beautiful woman with a wonderful sense of style and fashion that was always in tune with the times. After 32 years of marriage, Sophia and Richard’s paths diverged, sending her into the workplace at the age of 54. She persevered and eventually found her footing, while maintaining her beloved home on Abbey Road. Being a strong, independent woman, Sophia worked for 31 years and finally retired at the age of 85! Despite ending her working career at such an advanced age, she often forewarned her boys that, “retirement isn’t all it’s cracked up to be”. Sophia’s interests included her home, gardening, fashion, shopping, reading, bridge, hosting 4th of July parties, and most of all, her family. In 2015, she relocated to Wooster, OH to be closer to family. She will be remembered for her loving kindness, sense of humor, and spiritual outlook on life.
Sophia is survived by her sons, Richard (Joyce), Berthoud, CO; Bradford (Leticia), Wooster, OH; Gregory (Ramona), Big Prairie, OH; and Geoffrey (Carol), Cambria, CA; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sisters, Julie Ball, Grand Rapids, MI and Donna Holland, Sisters, OR.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Roberts Funeral Home, 7067 Cleveland Rd, Wooster, OH. Donations in her memory can be made to Life Care Hospice at www.lifecarehospice.org/donate.
