Warner D. Harper, 81, of Wooster, went home to be with the Lord Monday, March 13, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Friends may call Wednesday, March 22nd from 10 to 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church, 245 S. Grant St, Wooster, OH 44691. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church with Rev. Rickey Brown Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Cancer Association, Donation Processing Center, P.O. Box 7000, Albert Lea, MN 56007.
Warner was born October 26, 1935 in Trenton, Tennessee to Montana Harper and Audrey Buchanan. He graduated from Orrville High School. After high school he passed up an opportunity to tryout for the Cleveland Indians and enlisted in the U.S. Army. For his athletic achievements, he was inducted into the Wayne County Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 1996 and Orrville Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 1993.
He married Ruthie M. Carter on June 12, 1965. She died on June 13, 2003. Warner married Lorraine Scott on April 28, 20012.
Warner retired from Morton Salt after working at Regal Ware for 25 years. He was a member of Second Baptist Church where he sang in the Male Chorus, participated in Bible study and prayer service. Warner truly loved the Lord. He was an avid Cleveland sports fan, loved his music and playing his guitar. Above all, Warner loved his family and the time he spent with them.
Warner will be deeply missed by his loving wife Lorraine; children Deborah A. Wright, Zed G. (Michelle) Wright and Warnetta Harper-Smith, all of Wooster; grandchildren Therese N. Tarleton, Bradley L. Wright, Brittani N. Harper, Tyrone J. White, Simone L. Price, Miranda D. Johnson and Trey A. Wright; great-grandchildren Niara Tarleton-Allen, Izaiah, Jeremiah, Daniyah and Zareah Harper, Zandrea Robinson and Myah Johnson; step-children John (Nell) Porter, Rita Porter and Jacqueline Porter, all of Chicago, IL and Marcus Porter of Tacoma, WA; four step grandchildren; eighteen step great-grandchildren; brothers Michael Harper and Elston Harper both of Chicago, IL; sister Lois Harper-Moses of Chicago, IL; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and special daughter Angie Knighten.
Warner was preceded in death by his wife Ruthie of 38 years, son-in-law James "Jam" Smith, and sister Jewel "Penny" French.
