William Varney

December 26, 1922 — April 22, 2014

William Reed Varney, 91, of Millersburg, went home to be with Jesus Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Green Ridge Meadows after a period of declining health.
Friends may call Saturday, May 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Doug Gray and Pastor Bud Olszewski officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Grace Brethren Church of Millersburg, 4960 Township Rd. 305, Millersburg, Ohio 44654 or LifeCare Hospice, 2525 Back Orrville Rd., Wooster, Ohio 44691.
Reed was born December 26, 1922 in Red Jacket WV to Jerry and Sadie {Clay} Varney.
He enlisted in the Amy Air Corps when he was 18 and was the top turret gunner/flight engineer on the B17 flying fortress. Reed was stationed at Celone Army Air Base near Foggia, Italy. His squadron flew 33 missions. Reed was the recipient of 7 medals including the Purple Heart. After the war ended he returned to West Virginia and spent a period of years working in the coalmines before moving to Rittman, Ohio. There he worked for the Ohio Boxboard Co. until retiring to Lake Buckhorn. He was an avid sports fan of the Ohio professional teams. He also enjoyed watching his extended family play various sports.
He married the love of his life Iva Jean Baisden on May 11, 1948. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage together before the Lord took her home on December 18, 2005.
He was a member of Grace Brethren Church of Rittman before moving to Lake Buckhorn and then he became a member at the Grace Brethren Church of Millersburg. He was a man that loved God, people, and his country.
Reed will be deeply missed by his sister Virginia May, brother Curtis (Mary) Varney, special nieces and their husbands, Karen (Steve) Ramsier, Becky (Ron) McCall, his special adopted family, Elaine Coblentz and her children and grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, that he loved dearly.
Reed was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brothers, James, Donald, Jr, Bobbie, sister LaVera Dawn Elliot, and his good friend and fishing buddy, Perry Coblentz.
A very special note of thanks to the staff at Green Ridge Meadows for the excellent care Reed was given. Also appreciation for all the staff of the Millersburg office of Hospice did.
