William "Bill" Keating

William “Bill” J. Keating, 87, of Wooster, died Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Smithville Western Care Center, in Wooster.

Per Bill’s wishes, there will be no services.  Entombment will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be held.  Roberts Funeral Home – Sherwood Chapel, Wooster is handling arrangements.  Online tributes may be made at www.RobertsFuneralHome.com.   Memorial contributions may be made to LifeCare Hospice, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, OH 44691.

Bill was born July 12, 1930 in Nelsonville, Ohio to James and Ruth {Hellyer} Keating.  He graduated from Nelsonville High School in 1948 where he played football.  He then played quarterback for Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa and during his time in the Navy.  Bill joined the Navy in 1950, serving on the USS Kula Gulf until 1954.

He married Jane Gottke on March 7, 1951.  She survives.

William was an Ohio State Highway Patrolman from 1954 to 1977.  Following his retirement, Bill was the Director of Safety and Security at Apple Creek Developmental Center.  He then worked for the Ohio State Dept. of Liquor Control for 15 years, retiring in 1992.

Bill was an avid golfer, achieving four Hole-in-Ones and enjoyed photography, music, and watching sports.

Bill will be deeply missed by his wife Jane; daughters Nancy (Greg) Marthey and Patty (Jim) Marthey all of Wooster, son Jay Keating of Tucson, AZ; grandchildren Brianne (Jeff) Bailey, Brett (Jenna) Marthey, Megan and Molly Keating, Joel Keating; great-grandchildren Kaelynn and Ashtynn Marthey, Lilly and Layla Bailey; and a brother Edward (Phyllis) Keating of Hamilton.
