Zane Walker

February 3, 1935 — February 7, 2016

Zane Maynard Walker was born on February 3, 1935 in Marion Center, PA. He was the third and last surviving child of Clarence and Grace Walker who were waiting for him in heaven as were Jolly and Denver, his brothers. His wife, Elaine, of 51 years of marriage; his son, Stephen and his wife Maureen; and daughter, Sandra, and her husband, Doug, and children, Emma and Morgan, survive him.

One of Zane's proudest accomplishments was achieving Eagle Scout. He was an active member of Boy Scout Troup 132 where his son, Stephen, earned his Eagle Scout award. Zane loved to be outdoors and hunt in Rochester Mills with friend, Big Jim Leisure. Thanks to Dale Whitesel for continuing to allow hunting after the original property was sold. So many hunting stories, true or otherwise, come from those woods.

Railroading was one of Zane's lifelong passions. He worked on the AC&Y railroad in Akron for 41 years: 1 year as a brakeman and 40 as an engineer. Zane loved to reminisce about his railroad days over breakfast with Dave Cornell and other railroaders. When Zane wasn't at work he was at church. He joined the Chapel in University Park at age 26 and served as an usher and volunteer. Zane was very involved in playing softball and created lasting friendships including George Davies and Don Martin. His Sunday School class will certainly miss his passion and stories.

In the summers, Zane volunteered to drive for the Soapbox Derby. Over his 30 year tenure, he drove with Alan Barber, Darrel Harrison and Bill Koonce. Zane had many fond memories of time spent with the Derby.

The Wadsworth Hunt Club was loved by Zane where for over 45 years he performed volunteer and community service. The Hunt Club named the President's Award, "The Zane Walker Service Award." Bud Freeman and Ron Jones presented him with a lifetime achievement award on February 2, 2016. He was greatly touched by this honor.

Zane's love of sports manifested itself in his volunteer work for the Wadsworth Athletic Department with Brad Musgrave selling 50/50 tickets at football games. Honorary "Coach Walker" provided Andy Booth and the coaching staff of the Wadsworth Grizzlies Girls Basketball team with his input and wisdom over many winning seasons.

Monday mornings you would find Zane at Chuck's Barbershop in Wadsworth, which was the only place he would get his haircut. There was a lot of hot air at Chuck's and a good deal came from Zane.

Zane's personality enriched the lives of those he touched, which were many. From the Boy Scouts, The Chapel, AC&Y Railroad, Wadsworth Hunt Club, Soap Box Derby, and Wadsworth Grizzlies, his influence on our lives will be forever imprinted.

The Walker family has established a GoFundMe site in Zane's memory. All monies donated will be used to pay medical bills from his hospital stay and other medical treatment he received. Any monies remaining will be donated to the Wadsworth Hunt Club youth program.
