rthur Doyle Carpenter, 86, of Smithville died Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Wooster Community Hospital.?Services will be Friday at 11am at Grace Brethren Church with Pastor Bob Fetterhoff officiating.?Burial will take place at 10am at Smithville Cemetery.?Friends may call Thursday from 6pm to 8pm at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster.?Online tributes may be made at

Arthur was born August 27, 1924 in Wheeling, West Virginia.?He was adopted and raised by his grandmother Gertrude Carpenter Allen.?He was a graduate of Weston High School and served during World War II 4 years in the U. S. Navy.
Arthur moved to Wooster in 1948 where he was employed with Wooster Nash and then with Malloy Motors in Akron from 1951 to 1955 as a mechanic.
He dedicated most of his working years to the Village of Smithville from 1955 to 1964 where he started Smithville's first Police Department as the Chief of Police.?He helped establish one of the first emergency squads in Wayne Co., was on the Smithville Fire Department and was the Village Superintendent in charge of water, wastewater and streets.?In 1964 he moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he was General Manager of the Kentucky Fried Chicken stores for a short while, he then worked for the sewer department before serving on the Sunrise Golf Village Police Department and then the Lauderdale Lakes Police Department.?In 1967 he moved to Dalton where he was in charge of the water and sewer plant operations.?Then in 1968 he was hired in the Village of Forest, Ohio where he was in charge of sewer, water, and streets and was Chief of Police.?In 1971 he moved to Wooster and became Maintenance Manager of Shelmar Mobile Home Park.?In September 1972 he became a Deputy for the Wayne Co. Sheriff's Department.?In November of 1972 he returned to the Village of Smithville as Village Supervisor and Chief of Police until his retirement in 1986.?He then went to work for Engineering Associates and worked for them for 10 years.?Arthur was elected Mayor of Smithville in 1996 and served the village proudly 8 years until losing his eyesight forced him to retire.
He was a former member of the Smithville Lions Club & the FOP.?He was a member of the Methodist Church and had attended Grace Brethren Church and was a past Grand Master of the Masonic Senate Lodge No. 378 in Forest, Ohio.?He was a coach for boys and girls farm teams, boys hot stove and girl's softball team, coaching his son and daughter in both leagues.?Was an avid golfer who had 1 hole in one in his lifetime.
He will be deeply missed by his wife Diana and children Michael (Angie) of N. Canton, Ohio, Jennifer of Smithville, Bill of Jacksonville, Florida, Regina (Frank) Wiseman of Westerville, Ohio and Annalee (Dennis) Werntz of Orrville, Ohio, grandchildren Justin and Chantelle Dana, Bryce Carpenter, Jackie (Kevin) Dunigen, Justin (Jenny) Wiseman, Jason Shanklin, Kyle Shanklin, step-grandson David (Lauren) Wiseman and great grandchildren Alex, Nathan and Caleb Lewellen, Erin and Ryan Dunigen, Gabriel Wiseman and step-great-grandson David Liam, great-granddaughters Abronha, Madelyn and McKenna Shanklin.?Many friends including Robert and Brenda Vance who were there constantly when he needed to go somewhere.?No thank you is big enough for them.
