She was born Oct. 6, 1919, in Clover Hill, Perry County, Ohio, the fourth of six children to Thomas Ferguson and Jeanie S. McMillan Ferguson. She was united in marriage to William K. "Bill" Henning on Aug. 28, 1939.
Betty Jean was a graduate of New Lexington High School and Ohio Central Business College, Zanesville. She was employed as a deputy clerk for Wayne County Probate Court for several years and later retired from Meaden & Moore, CPAs of Wooster. She had also previously worked for International Paper Company of Wooster.
After retirement Betty and Bill spent nine winters in Fort Lauderdale and North Fort Myers, Fla. Betty loved to travel and in later years, spent time in Pleasanton, Calif., then moving to Henderson, Nev., in 2001 and finally moving to Texas in 2008.
As a hobby she enjoyed interior decorating, participating in bowling and watching basketball games. She was also an avid Cleveland Indians fan. She was a wonderful cook and pie maker, with cream pies being her specialty.
She was a member of Central Christian Church of Wooster, where she had served as a deaconess.
She was preceded in death and now united again with her husband, William, who passed away Jan. 22, 1986; her parents; brothers, James, Ralph and Robert Ferguson; a sister, Ruth J. Moore Kepner and an infant sister, Isabella.
Surviving are daughters, Judith Ann (James) Deneke of Greer, S.C., and Patricia Jean (Maynard) Bates of Leander, Texas; grandchildren, Rebecca Jean Deneke and her husband, Floyd Pierce of Alvarado, Texas, Deborah Ann Deneke of Asheboro, N.C., Jennifer Kaye (Kane) Maynard of Greer, S.C., Kelly Elizabeth Meyer of Leander, Texas, and Jeffrey Thomas Bates of Henderson, Nev.; great-grandchildren, twins Kelsey Kaye and Kaitlyn Autumn Maynard of Greer, S.C., Dylan Michael Maynard of Greer, S.C., Ryan James Pierce and Meghan Jean Pierce of Alvarado, Texas, and Thomas Charles Meyer of Leander, Texas.
Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, Wooster, with the Rev. Kevin Phipps officiating.
Roberts Funeral Home, Sherwood Chapel, Wooster, is assisting the family.
