Carl Stoll

Carl Victor Stoll Passed away suddenly December 30, 2009, after a three week recovery from surgery.
Mr. Stoll was a lifelong resident of Wayne County, Ohio.
He was born the fifth child of Myrtle Kaiser Stoll and Ferdinand William Stoll at Rittman, Ohio, on October 22, 1920.
His family moved to the family farm at 8798 Mt. Eaton Road when Carl was 12 years old.
Carl took over the duties of farming the farm when his father had a broken leg.
Carl farmed that farm for all of his life.
He was educated in Marshallville and worked shortly as a laborer when he decided that this was no life for a farmer.
He met and married Hazel Margaret Gerbig of Western Star, Ohio, in 1941.
They then began their married life as farmers, first for Geogre Onslager, an industrialist who had an experimental farm in Sharon Center, Ohio, and later on their own farms.
While working for Mr. Onslager, Carl learned the importance of chemicals to enhance soils fertilizers.
In 1946, after the birth of their two children, Gerald in 1943 and Sharon in 1946, the family moved back to Marshallville, where Carl and Hazel bought the Stoll family farm from his father. They farmed there and in 1956 bought a larger farm, Twin Lakes, in North Lawrence, Ohio. With his brother, Ross (Skip), Carl farmed Twin Lakes for seven years when he sold his interest to Skip. Carl and Hazel returned to the Marshallville farm and continued farming. It was at this time that they began a fertilizer business called Y&S Crop Service for 25 years.
In order to have quality time with family, Carl and Hazel bought an eighty acre farm overlooking Seneca Lake in Guernsey County. For 40 years the family water skied and enjoyed the “Half A Day” farm. Carl also enjoyed hunting and fishing which he did most of his adult life, first yearly in Canada and then at Seneca Lake.
An active community member, Carl was a member of the Lion’s Club for many years; he was a charter member of the Marshallville Historical Society, as well as, a founding member of the Marshallville Historical Tractor Pull Association. He remodeled and began the only restaurant in Marshallville in the 1970’s, which he later sold. He also was an active member and church officer of the Marshallville United Church of Christ.
Carl always believed in the importance of education and was an active force in seeing all the grandchildren educated. His wife of almost 70 years, Hazel, survives at the family farm. His son, Gerald and grandson Matthew continue the farming tradition at the home. His daughter Sharon Kay, lives and ranches in northern Idaho with her husband, Mark Moorer. His wife, Hazel, son Gerald and wife Yvonne; daughter, Sharon Kay; one brother, Ross William (Skip) of North Lawrence,; and six grandchildren survive: Michelle (Eric) Toivonen of University Heights, Ohio; Marcia (Thomas) Mazingo of Houston, Texas; Matthew (Elizabeth) Stoll of Marshallville; Millicent (Christopher) Hassandras of Seattle, Washington; and Amanda and Rachal Stoll-Moorer of Potlatch, Idaho. Also surviving are 8 great grandchildren.
His parents, Ferdinand and Myrtle, and 9 brothers and sisters preceded him in death; Granville Ferdinand (Bud) Stoll, Esta Coyle, Martha Grunder; Catherine Stoll, Dorothy Stoll, Cora Belle Leitner; Jane Masters Hendrix, Ellen Caillet, and Ada Oder.
Mr. Stoll has been cremated, his ashes spread on his beloved farm in a private family service conducted by Marshallville United Church of Christ Pastor, Don Evans. As to his wishes, there will be no public service immediately, a celebration of his life will occur this summer at the church.
