Colette Hughes

August 16, 1919 — January 31, 2010

Colette G. “Granny” Hughes, 90, died Sunday, January 31, 2010. She was born August 16, 1919 in Falls City Nebraska to Julius and Mary Emma Mutter. She married Paul (Pete) Hughes in 1940. He was involved in the oil field and they moved several times as he followed oil booms. This brought them to Wooster from Olney, Illinois in 1959. Pete died January 25, 1965. Granny moved to Apple Creek in 1971 and retired from the ACDC in 1985. For the last 20 years she has resided at Dogwood Circle where she enjoyed a friendship with her special neighbor Bernie Franks.

Her greatest joy was being part of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives. She was a faithful observer, fan, and supporter of their many activities. They were all a source of great pride to her.

She and granddaughter Jennifer have delivered the Rt 2/3 Meals on Wheels route in Orrville together for the last 14+ years.

She will be deeply missed by her children Larry (Donna) Hughes, Seattle, WA; Mary Jane Hughes, Albuquerque, NM; Suzy (Jim) Orr, Apple Creek; Michael Hughes (deceased); Martha (Don) Arnold, Las Vegas, NV; and Jim (Jan) Hughes of Wooster, grandchildren Vickie (Dave Wyatt) Jimenez; Paul Hughes, Ben Hoessle, Jennifer Greathouse-Fenton, Jon (Missy) Orr, Becca (Peter) Lauffenburger, Jill (Todd) Carter; Melissa (Bobby) Avery; Patrick Hughes; Nathan (Erin) Hughes and Marcus Hughes, great-grandchildren Rachel Spencer; Bailey Wyatt; Jacob Greathouse; Ali Greathouse; Megan Orr; Jason Orr; Justin Orr; Anna Lauffenburger; Isaac Lauffenburger; Jared Carter; Elena Carter; Liam Carter, Dylan Avery and James Avery.

Per Granny’s wishes she has been cremated and the ashes will be buried in private family services at a later date in Apple Creek and Carlyle Illinois cemeteries.

Gifts in her memory can be sent to the Salvation Army, 437 S. Market St., Wooster, OH 44691.

She was a joy to us all and we will miss her deeply. Her strength is in our souls, her humor is in our hearts, and her stories will live on in our memories.
