Doris I. Birkes, 83, of Wooster, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008, at West View Manor in Wooster. Friends may call Friday from 6pm to 8pm at Roberts Funeral Home-Sherwood Chapel, Wooster. Services will be Saturday at 11:00am at the funeral home with Pastor Eric Fairhurst officiating. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens.

Doris was born June 13, 1925 in Centralia, Illinois to Archie and Ida F. (Keil) Schofield. She married John Birkes on September 2, 1950. He died October 8, 1991.
Doris was the switchboard operator for Apple Creek Developmental Center for 26 years, retiring in 1994. She was a member of the Highland Church of God, and the Widows, Widowers, and Friends Club.
Doris will be deeply missed by her children Jerry (Lisa Grinder) Birkes and Janice (Rod) Ogden all of Wooster, Judith (Howard) Birkes-Weinstein of California and Nancy (Brian) Copeland of Orrville and 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband John.
