Douglas Cartledge

Douglas Cartledge, 87, died Wednesday, February 17, 2010 at Hospice of Medina County at the Inn in Medina. Memorial services will be Saturday at 11:00 A.M. at Roberts Funeral Home-Hillcrest Chapel, 9560 Acme, Road, Seville with Pastor Tim McCollum officiating.



Douglas was born September 24, 1922 in Tideswell, England to Mornington and Mona (Gregory) Cartledge. He was a Lieutenant In the Fleet Air Army of the British Navy and piloted Swordfish aircraft from HMS Ark Royal. Douglas married Joanna Belle Harkness on February 6, 1943. After they were married, they moved to Middle Bass Island to work for Lonz Winery. They later had a family charter boat/commercial fishing business including ice fishing. Other family enterprises included excavation, construction and spider extermination. Mr. Cartledge retired from Lake Erie Utilities where he was a certified water-sanitary sewer operator. He was known around the island for the “Punch and Judy” puppet shows, wine- making skills, herbal vinegar and tomato gardening and musical performances. Whenever someone wanted to learn something or needed something, the word was “Go ask Doug”.



Douglas will be deeply missed by his wife, Belle; his children, Douglas Cartledge of Seville, Charles Cartledge of Seville, Mary Jo Cartledgehayes of Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, sister Mary Astrid Ayers of Blackwell, England, and two nephews. His daughter Amy Thomas Reidling preceded him in death.
