Everett "Perk" F. Perkins, Jr, 85, died Tuesday, March 6, 2007. He was Wadsworth's most decorated Veteran of World War II and served as Memorial Day parade marshal for 60 years. Perk was born on June 5, 1921, to Everett F. Sr. and Averil Bays Perkins and moved to a farm in Wadsworth. He graduated from Wadsworth High School in 1939. Perk played football on the 1938 championship team and was inducted into the Wadsworth High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. After graduating from high school, he joined the Army Air Corp and he was stationed at Hickham Field in Hawaii for training. He survived the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Perk was a Master Sergeant in the 42nd Bomber Squadron and flew 89 missions in the southwest Pacific as a flight engineer on B-17s. He received three Silver Stars for Gallantry, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, a Purple Heart and two Air Medals, among the total number of 17 Service Medals awarded.
He was married to his high school sweetheart Grace Lesher on August 18, 1943. He left the army in 1945 and moved back to Wadsworth where he worked at Houglan Hardware and bought the business in the mid 1960's. Perk was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Lions, Kiwanis, American Legion, Wadsworth VFW and Wadsworth Hunt Club. He was a member of the Wadsworth Masonic Lodge #385 for over 50 years and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
Perk is survived by his wife, Grace of Wadsworth, daughters Sandra (Steve) Bell of Shelby, Karen (John) Sharkey of Wadsworth, son Michael of Wadsworth, grandchildren Wendy (Todd) Nicodemus of Wadsworth, Jackie (Dan) Grinstead of North Carolina, Stacy (Todd) Weatherbie of Shelby, great-grandchildren Samuel and Ian Nicodemus, Christopher, Benjamin and Alexis Grinstead, Isabella and Malia Weatherbie, brother Russell Perkins of Ashland and sister Margaret Perkins of Seville.
Services for Perk will be held at the Roberts Funeral Home, Hillcrest Chapel, Wadsworth, on Monday, March 12, at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Dan Cammarn officiating. Friends may call Sunday from 3pm-6pm at the funeral home where Masonic services will be conducted. ?Burial will be at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery where military rites will be held. ?Online tribute may be made at www.robertsfuneralhome.com.
