Joseph M. Palermo, Sr. 88, of Wooster died Wednesday September 30, 2009 at Select Specialty Hospital in Akron, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday October 5, 2009 at St. Mary Catholic Church at 11 a.m., with Father Stephen Moran officiating. Friends may call 6 to 8 p.m at Roberts Funeral Home – Sherwood Chapel, Wooster on Sunday October 4, 2009 at the funeral home. Joseph was born August 11, 1921 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania to Michael F. and Carrie (Rouse) Palermo. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years surviving the attack at Pearl Harbor and served during WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He was a Senior Enlisted Advisor to National Guard from 1964-1966. He retired from the Army in 1967.
He married Carmella Diana on March 2, 1946. She died in 1988. Joe attended High School Administrative Schools at Fort Benjamin Harrison, and the University of Maryland, the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy and also took basic advance courses in computer budget and record keeping. Joe worked as the Administrator Officer for the Wooster Police Department for 24 years, retiring in 1991. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Wooster American Legion. He was the past President of the Wayne County Kidney Foundation and of the Wooster Exchange Club, and President of the Buckeye II Pearl Harbor Survivors. Joe was also a member of the Elks Club of Wooster, Fraternal Order of Police, Camp Pee Wee Hollow Corp. Council and a member of the Traffic Commission of the
City of Wooster. Joe enjoyed cooking, fishing, boating, hunting, and was an avid traveler. He also enjoyed watching baseball, basketball, and football.
Joseph will be deeply missed by his companion Julia Grosjean, his children Diane Parker of Wooster and Joseph M. Palermo Jr. (Tari) of Vero Beach, Florida grandchildren Sean (Christie) Parker of Brunswick, OH, Brooks (Robert) Kemp of Potomac, MD; great-grandchildren Trevor, Logan, and Vincent Parker and Bobbie and Josie Kemp; brother Robert Palermo and sisters Angelyn Barth, Doris (Paul) Marsicano, Jeanne (Donald) Tombasco and Alice Kender of PA, numerous nieces and nephews and the Grosjean family.
