Victoria Mary Franks, 94, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at the Westminster Thurber Community Retirement Center in Columbus, Ohio. She had lived there the past four years.
Vicki, as she was known to her many friends, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 18, 1916 to Ralph and Mary {Lechner} Florens. After graduating from Kent State University in 1937, she taught in the Parma and Berea school systems for the next 17 years. In 2011 she received a certificate for her 75 years of membership in the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.
In 1943 she married Brooks D. Franks in Cheyenne, Wyoming at the First Methodist Church. While living in Cheyenne, she began her life-long commitment to volunteerism as a member of the Red Cross Canteen Corp. She received a certificate from President Roosevelt for her participation.
After lving in Berea and Seville, Vicki and her family moved to Wooster in 1956 where she eventually became co-owner of the Wooster Music Center. She worked there until her retirement in 1980. One of her hobbies was writing poetry and she often wrote about family and friends. Several of her poems were published in church programs and one about the Cleveland Indians was read on the radio during an Indians game.
She was a long-time member of the Wooster United Methodist Church and served the church in many capacities. Among them, she taugh Sunday School, was secretary of the Board of Trustees, president of the United Methodist Women and was very active in her church circle.
Vicki was a life member and active volunteer at the Wooster Community Hospital from 1956 until 2003. She was president of the hospital auxilary in 1968 and 1969. She was a member of the Monday Club and paticipated in many other community activities and events.
She first moved to Tucson, Arizoma after her husband’s death in 1988. While in Tucson she was a member of the Christ Methodist Church and participated in many volunteer activities. After several years she returned to Wooster and then moved back to Tucson in 2004.
Vicki is survived by her son, Allan D. (Marcia) Franks of Worthington, Ohio; their son Andrew (Jessica) Franks of Columbus; and her daughter, Barbara (Mark) Westburg of San Fransisco, California.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am September 6, 2011 at Roberts Funeral Home- Sherwood Chapel with Reverend Black of the Wooster Methodist Church officiating. Friends may call one our prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the United Methodist Women of Wooster, or the Wooster Community Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship Fund.
