William Balloon

October 2, 1921 — May 7, 2011

William “Bill” P. Balloon, 89, a long time resident of Wooster, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Wooster Community Hospital.Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2 P.M. at Roberts Funeral Home – Sherwood Chapel, Wooster with Rev. Kevin Phipps officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Sherwood Memorial Gardens, where military rites will be held.Online tributes may be made at www.robertsfuneralhome.com


In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County 2525 Back Orrville Rd and the Wayne County Humane Society, 1161 Mechanicsburg Rd.


William was born in Rittman, October 2, 1921, the son of Ambrose and Antoinette Balloon.He graduated from Rittman High School.He then attended the College of Wooster.Like many his education was interrupted by World War II.He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp where he became a Staff Sergeant.It was during the war that he married his wife Doris; they have been together for 67 years.


After the war he briefly worked at Westinghouse in Mansfield where he was injured in an accident.While recovering he finished his education at the College of Wooster.Upon graduation he joined the East Ohio Gas Company where he worked more than 42 years until his retirement.


For 13 years during the 1950’s and middle 1960’s he was director of the boys YMCA recreational basketball leagues which played in the various church gyms in Wooster.This was prior to the establishment of the YMCA at its current location.Often during those years he would open one of the gyms during the weekend or during vacation so that kids could play basketball.When the present YMCA was built he was on the board of directors.


He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.He was also a member of the Lions Club.


His favorite activity during his life was tennis.He started playing tennis in his early 20’s and he played until he was 82.During that time he won numerous city championships in doubles.


Surviving are his wife Doris; his sons William, Donald, and Craig; granddaughters Jennifer, Victoria, and Allison; grandsons Anthony, Scot and Alexander; great grandchildren Grayson, Nathaniel, Maddox, and Ella Kate.Also surviving are his sisters Rosalind, Mary and Lydia.He was predeceased by his grandson Robert.
