William Bostic

William Teddy Valentine Bostic of Ashland died in the early morning hours of February 1, 2012 at Hospice House in Ashland after a short illness, just two weeks shy of his 85th birthday on February 14. He was born in 1927 in Campbell County, Tennessee, the third of twelve children of Harrison Valentine and Roxie Ellen (née Sharp) Bostic.


On August 6, 1949 he married Winnie Blanche Rogers, who preceded him in death. They had two children, Carolyn Sue (Ronald) Marenchin and Peggy Ann Lynnette Bostic, both of Ashland.


In addition to his two daughters and his granddaughter Amanda Kathryn (Steven) Wolgast of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Teddy leaves behind three brothers, Jessie (Louise) of Jacksboro, TN, Dennis of La Follette, TN and Warren (Phyllis) of Strawberry Plains, TN, two sisters, June (Eulis) Francisco of Gibraltar, MI and Margaret Jane (Bill) Given of Jacksboro, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews.


Teddy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Hobert and Cecil, four sisters, Ina Mae Bostic, Ruth Afticz, Eva Sanders and Wanda Jordan, and by half-siblings Walter Bostic and an unnamed newborn.


A World War II veteran, Mr. Bostic served in the US Navy on the ships USS Sylvania, USS Duluth, USS St Paul, USS Helena and USS Los Angeles, and also served as part of a flag allowance. While on the USS Sylvania he witnessed one or both tests of atomic bombs ("Operation Crossroads") at Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands in July, 1946.


Teddy and Blanche and their family lived in Toledo, Oregon (OH) and Oak Harbor, Ohio. He was employed for many years as a boilermaker in the Detroit, Toledo andClevelandareasand was a member of Boilermaker Local 85 in Rossford, Ohio. After retirement Teddy and Blanche moved to Ashland to be near their children.


Teddy was baptized by his father, who was a Missionary Baptist minister on the weekends and a coal miner and farmer during the week. Before declining health Teddy was a member of First Baptist Church in West Salem and most recently attended weekly worship as a resident of The Good Shepherd in Ashland.


A memorial service will be held this Saturday, February 18 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 508 Center Street in Ashland with Pastor Sanford C. Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends at the church preceding the service from 12 noon to 1 p.m.


The family will meet at 11 a.m. that day at the Ashland County Memorial Park Mausoleum where Mr. Bostic will be inurned. Military rites will be provided by Ashland Veterans Honor Guard and active duty servicemen.. Inurnment will take place privately with the family. Roberts Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805 or to The Good Shepherd, 622 Center Street, Ashland, Ohio 44805. (Mr. Bostic was the second patient to stay at Hospice House when it opened in January, 2007, but recovered enough to spend the last five years of his life at The Good Shepherd.)
